What can we say about this sumptuous vintage, we know the greatness of the balance of the Sauternes of 2001, wines with a very great ageing potential, which will surely give their full measure in about thirty years.
The 2001 vintage as seen by Mireille Daret:
Heat and rain favoured the spread of Botrytis until the end of the first week of October. The weather was ideally sunny for the 2001 harvest, which took place from Monday 8 October to Wednesday 24 October inclusive. In other words, the harvest was completed in two and a half weeks, which is short, and thirteen days of harvest in total: which is also a small amount.
As in 1996, we kept “turning” on the property to pick the botrytised grains as they were concentrated: in a way, a single sorting which alone is a dozen sorts… And no “bad rotten”.
Although we harvested all our grapes, we ended up with a yield of 11.5 hl/ha, which is a sign of a very rapid concentration of the harvest, a bit like in 1997. Twenty-five barrels aged.
